About Us

American Friends of Canadian Nature (AFCN) – formerly known as Friends of the Nature Conservancy of Canada – is a U.S. charity that supports land conservation in Canada through cross-border conservation. We focus on protecting land and habitat that is valuable to both the U.S. and Canada. Donations from U.S. residents, citizens, taxpayers, corporations and foundations supports valuable conservation efforts.

AFCN supports the work of numerous Canadian conservation organization, including but not limited to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, which is separate and distinct from AFCN. To learn more about these organizations, visit the section about our partners.

AFCN’s Status

AFCN was incorporated on June 3, 1996 under the laws of the State of New York as a domestic not-for-profit corporation engaged exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes.

In March 2005, AFCN was granted the 501(c)(3) status by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, making U.S. donors eligible for tax deduction letters upon donation to AFCN.

On May 2, 2007, AFCN became a prescribed donee with the Canadian Revenue Agency – allowing U.S. donors to donate ecologically significant Canadian real property to AFCN without paying capital gains tax under the Income Tax Act Canada.
